Different types of caster mounts

At Industrial Wheels you can find castors in a wide variety of characteristics. Depending on your application, you can choose different types of castor mounts for your castors. The most common types of mountings for casters are the castors with a top mounting plate. But you will also find various types of castors with a stem mounting. In this article, we will elaborate on the most common types of castor mounts.

Plate mounting

The castors with a top plate mounting come with a top plate. This top plate is most commonly fitted with mounting holes. You can find this mounting on rigid or swivel casters. Castor mounts are generally used on applications with a heavy load as they have a higher load capacity than stem mounted castors. Another advantage of plate mounted castors is that they are easy to install on your appliances.

Stem mounting

There are several types of stem mounted castors. In most cases these types of castors are used for lightweight applications. Stem castors are mostly available as swivel castors which allows them to rotate in 360 degrees. One advantage of stem mounted castors is that they are ideal for small spaces.

Grip ring stem castors
Grip ring stem casters are available in all sizes and are designed to fit into a mounting hole or socket to attach the castors to your appliances. The grip ring is used to keep the castor fixed in the mounting hole. Ring stem castors are most commonly used as furniture castors or as medical castors.

Threaded stem castors
Threaded stem castors are equipped with a threaded stem just above the wheel housing. You can directly fix these castors by this thread into the threaded holes on your appliances.

As these types of caster mounts are very versatile you can find them on all sorts of equipment and appliances like furniture, scaffolding, tool boxes, carts and more. A benefit of this mounting is that the castors are very easy to replace.

Keep in mind that almost all threaded stem castors are swivel castors. Consider top plate mounted castors if you need a rigid castor wheel.

Bolt-on stem castors
Bolt hole castors are equipped with a hole on top. A bolt can be passed through this hole and can be fixed to the machinery or appliance. This type of castor can be mounted directly onto your appliances. Bolt-on castors can also be attached with a non-threaded stem that is equipped with one or more holes going through the stem. These can be inserted in a round or square tube that also has holes. By passing a bolt through these corresponding holes, you can fix this type of castor. This castor mount type is very sturdy and most commonly used on scaffolding.

Choosing the right castor for your industry

Bear in mind that the right type of castor mount is just one of the characteristics you should look for when selecting a type of castor. Besides the dimensions, you should also pay attention to the material of the wheel and the tread material of your castors. Choosing the right castor for your industry gets you more ease of handling, a better rolling resistance, more durability and of course the best maneuverability.
